I am Cooley Jamaican and my hair is slowing becoming damaged. I think it is dead, but I'm not sure. I clip my ends every 6-8 weeks. The back is shorter that the front and I don't think it is growing. It used to be long, but now it is short and hasn't moved for about 8 months. The front of my hair is sort of changing texture too. What should I do? |

I am a lifelong Detroiter, who's in dire need of a decent, professional hair stylist. Long story short, I can count on one hand the good, professionals who worked on my hair. They usually leave the shop, and I'm stuck with a stylist that knows less than I do. Here are the horror stories:
1) 1997: I was in this shop with a super stylist, she left the city and suggested this older lady do my hair. She was basically nuts. She giggled all the time, and kept burning my scalp when pressing. Went to another shop, owner was an alcoholic, hands shook, I ran out. Literally.
2) 1998-mid-1999: A coworker recommended a stylist to me. Went to the shop, the lady scared the beejesus outta me. Had an attitude that Mr. T. would love, gave crappy perms (hair came out in clumps).
3) 2000-2004: Another great stylist leaves me. Boo hoo!
4) 2004-2005: After super-stylist leaves, the owner takes a stab at my hair. One shouldn't have headaches and anxiety after getting their hair styled. At. All.
5) 2005: One lone stylist owns shop, waited to be styled for about 2 - 3 hours, burned me and my hair to a crisp. Had medical and mental issues.
6) 2006-2007: Went to a 'hair clinic' type of shop. Terrific hairstylists, but owner pressed hair. Made one feel like crap if so much as ONE HAIR came out onto the comb, blamed you for just being an idiot. He was so arrogant that one felt they should consider themselves blessed for having him touch their scalp.
7) 2008: The. Worst. Perm. In. The. World. Terrific stylist, pressed my hair. Hair kept getting 'nappy', stylist suggested a perm. The perm made my hair frizzy and hard, then the stylist pressed my hair, further damaging it.
2008-2009: Wonderful but mentally unstable stylist. The condition of one's hair depended on her mood. Guess what? She's having problems with her boyfriend, my hair is falling out, including the new growth.
9) Present: Yesterday, I went to a multi-cultured hair salon(Read: White folks doing Black hair). Girl acted like my hair was a science project, even though she claimed to have experience with 'my type' of hair. Shampooed my hair for a brief second, then used only a doll-sized flat iron for my hair. My hair looked like an Afro with strands.
Please, if there is a Detroiter amongst you, PLEASE guide me to a hair stylist who:
1) Is reasonably priced
2) Is professional
3) Conveniently located
4) No drug, alcohol, mental or emotional issues
Thank yew. |
